This one has a particularly cool late-'60s occult angle. The cover leads with “BLACK MAGIC: New Orleans VOODOO,” corresponding to Brett Howard's feature That Old Black Magic, described inside as a look at African Voodoo traditions in New Orleans.
The pictorial lineup includes Jill Hammond in Leo's Jill, photographed by Irv Carsten; Treed, photographed by Ron Vogel; Star Gazing, photographed by Alan N. Houghton; Hild Lucky in It's Lucky in America; Louise Thompson in Louise the Deraileuse; and Pat Chapman in She Stands Pat.
There's also another interesting literary connection: Gary Paulsen contributes the fiction story A Matter for Discussion. Other fiction includes Pit of Fear by Earle Schell, But the Melody Lingered On by Gillian Dow and The Split Buddha by Lee Jenson.
Additional period features include Paper Lions, Paper Actors, How to Multiply Where You Divide, and The Cheaters, with the cover advertising “Are Wife Swappers Honest?”
A fantastic piece of 1969 newsstand culture with an especially strong combination of vintage glamour, occult/voodoo imagery and late-'60s counterculture subject matter.
Condition: Nice vintage condition for an original 1969 publication with expected handling and surface wear. The dramatic Kathryn Dix cover remains colorful and presents very well. Please review the photos for condition and details.
