Amateurs 1930: secret and intimate images of debauchery between the wars
Amateurs 1930: secret and intimate images of debauchery between the wars
Alexandre Dupouy
In the 1930s, the democratization of equipment and development allowed every household to own a camera.
Helping the libertine atmosphere, some somewhat voyeuristic men and some somewhat exhibitionistic women quickly understood the pleasure they could derive from this new process.
The couples play, provoke each other, excite each other, somewhat aware all the same that the intimacy that is engraved in the gelatin will be read by other protagonists. Several decades later, these plethoric images with their old-fashioned and moving charm have become particularly rare, victims of the obscurantism of the following generations. Because, at each succession, the discovery of photos of dearly departed in unmentionable situations has led to family burnings in the name of respect, modesty and memory. The hundred images offered here, a nostalgic message from a bygone era, were chosen for the humor and tenderness they exude, a sensitive little thing, a libertine snub to the conventional moral order.
